Are the Jews the Chosen People?
I guess the type of person reading columns like this asked at one point or another reason, thousands of years, there has been much attention given to the Jews and why, today, Israel , the only Jewish state.
But how most people this concern? There is no entirely rational explanation for the amount of attention to the Jews and the Jewish state. And there is no entirely rational explanation for the amount of hatred toward Jews and the Jewish state.
A lifetime of study of this issue, including writing (with Rabbi Joseph Telushkin) a book on anti-Semitism ("Why the Jews? The Reason for Antisemitism") convinced me that with all the explanations sound, there is an explanation that transcends reason alone.
It is that Jews are the chosen people of God.
Now, believe me, dear reader, I am well aware of the dangers of such a claim.
It seems chauvinistic. It seems racist. And it seems irrational, if not bizarre.
But it is not one of those.
Regarding chauvinism, there is no hint of superiority inherent in the application of selected Jewish-ness. In fact, the Jewish Bible, the book states that Jews are chosen, constantly reprimanded the Jews for their flawed moral behavior. No bible of any other religion is so critical of the religious group affiliated with the Bible as the Hebrew Scriptures are Jews.
Regarding racism, Jewish chosen-tion can not be racist by definition. Here's why: a) Jews are not a race, there are Jews of all races.And b) any person of any race, ethnicity or nationality can become a member of the Jewish people and, therefore, also be chosen as Abraham, Moses, Jeremiah, and Chief Rabbi of Israel.
And with regard to chosen-ness to be a claim irrational, even bizarre, it must be true that atheists. They do not believe in a selector, so that they can not believe an elected official. But most of believing Jews and Christians (and especially the founders who saw America as a Second Israel, a people elected seconds), Jewish elution was given.And even the atheist must consider the evidence and conclude that Jews play a role in history that defies reason.
Reason alone can explain how a mish-mash of former slaves were able to change history - to introduce the moral of God the Creator we know God, to write a book the world's most influential, the Bible ; develop ethical monotheism, being the only civilization to refuse the worldview and give cyclic belief in humanity linear (ie intentional) history, to provide moral prophets motor and well more - without God plays a decisive role in the history of this people?
