Not All Pneumonia Patients Need a Chest X-Ray

pneumonia patients who are under 50 and do not smoke do not need X-rays for lung cancer, suggests a new study from Canada.

The conclusion goes against the guidelines for most of the treatment of pneumonia, which say that patients should have X-rays to rule out lung cancer is the hidden cause of pneumonia.

It also comes amid recent research suggests that radiation from chest scans can increase the risk of certain cancers, including breast cancer.

"If you're over 50 years and a smoker, you need a follow-up chest X-ray, Dr.Eric Mortensen, who has studied pneumonia and lung cancer at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, told Reuters Health.

However, "it is important not to expose people who are not at risk (lung cancer) added to radiation," said Mortensen, who was not involved in the study current.

Dr. Sumit Majumdar of the University of Alberta in Edmonton and colleagues followed about 3,400 patients who were treated for pneumonia in their hometown between 2000 and 2002.

Patients were a mean age of 58, and about one in six were smokers.

During the three months after being diagnosed with pneumonia, less than half the patients received a chest radiograph to check lung cancer.

Just over 1 percent of all patients with pneumonia (36 people) were diagnosed with lung cancer from a radiograph during these three months - which rose to 2.3 percent (79 people) with X-rays given in the next 5 years. No fewer than 40 patients had lung cancer during the five year period.

The researchers calculated that if all patients had received a chest radiograph shortly after treatment for pneumonia, 1.7 per cent of them were diagnosed with lung cancer. If doctors limited radiographs of patients 50 years and over, only one case of lung cancer were missed and nearly 3 percent of radiographs would have found a cancer in the elderly population.

This suggests that chest radiography should be performed only on patients with pneumonia aged 50 and older to reduce the number of X-rays performed on people who are very unlikely to have lung cancer, the authors write in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

They add that the cost of a chest in Edmonton is about $ 35, so that patients imaging over 50 would cost $ 1250 "with lung cancer detected," compared to $ 2,125 if all patients with pneumonia get x-rays.

The guidelines recommend that patients with pneumonia to screen for lung cancer because both are closely linked.

For a man of 39 AA was sarcoidosis in the lungs and the patient is a smoker, can become a lung cancer?

He fell nearly 50 pounds in six months and had sleep apnea, but it was. Is very weak and tired all the time. Problems and pain during sleep at night. Face to lymph nodes and chronic symptoms of chest pain. At one point I had a severe cough that would not quit. Do not go to the doctor, so when the doctor said he needed an X-ray, it will not. It's been years since his last chest radiograph. He smoked for 15 years for a few years, has taken over and now over a year since the last time you smoked. We are afraid to hear because the sarcoidosis lung cancer spread to his eyes, lungs, and now his bones. His eyes have improved, but very sick. The night broke out in sweat, and my question is whether it looks like lung cancer or advancement of sarcoidosis? Has anyone experience any person from becoming a cancer of the lung sarcoidosis?

Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory, autoimmune and is not associated with the development of lung cancer, although some symptoms may resemble a lung cancer at advanced stage, especially in stage IV sarcoidosis. He may be a systemic disease causing major difficulties lung / respiratory. That said, this man has a history of smoking, it would be unthinkable for lung cancer have been developed independently of sarcoidosis. Certainly, a proper assessment to the doctor later recommended work.
