Severe Storm Slams Floyd County

ROME, Ga. -- The tornado warning siren started going off at Shorter University in Rome as an ominous bank of dark clouds rolled in and trees waved in the wind around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

About an hour after the sirens sounded, it started raining.

A heavy downpour pounded Floyd County and produced golf ball sized hail.

In Bartow County, trees fell across Highway 411 and caused a crash that stopped traffic for four hours.

Lisa Gray said she got out of her car to direct traffic.

"I guided one 18-wheeler through and we were standing there trying to slow traffic down. There was an 18-wheeler coming and I tried to slow him down. He ended up slamming on his brakes. His trailer locked up. I had to run into the woods. He jackknifed and hit the tree," said Gray.

Fletcher Edge was driving that 18-wheeler.

"The scary part was seeing that girl. If she hadn't been there, I would have took my chances hitting the top of that tree and stayed in the road. I would have busted a headlight or knocked a mirror off," said Edge.

It was the second round of storms to hit the area.

Early Wednesday morning, people who live on Brookwood Avenue in Rome said at tornado tore through their neighborhood.

Barry Mims said he was about to leave his house when the storm hit.

"I got ready to take my wife to work. I looked out the window it got real quiet. Above this house over here I saw the wind twisting like a tornado," said Mims.

Twisted, toppled trees fell across the road, onto several vehicles, power lines and on houses.

Officials said a 3-month-old little girl was severely injured when a tree fell on her family's home. A branch broke through a window and hit her in the forehead.

Alejantra Cisneros lives in the neighborhood. Cisneros said the storm came through fast and furious.

"I was scared. I just hear, 'Boom!' when the tree fell on my car," said Cisneros.

The damage in Floyd County is so bad, the governor listed it as one of Georgia counties that needs emergency help. The following are comments from our users. Wanda Ely takes the title in the 2011 Floyd County Schools Bus ...

Wanda Ely may not be able to tame a bronco or corral a steer but she showed she could hold her own in a Road-e-o on Friday the 13th.  Ely took first place in the 23rd annual Floyd County Schools Bus Safety Road-e-o to win the bus driving title for 2011.   Over 40 bus drivers from the school system participated in this annual event that focuses on driver training and skill.  Ely placed sixth in last year’s competition.

The Floyd County Schools Bus Safety Road-e-o is an annual competition that tests the skill and driving knowledge of school bus drivers.  The Road-e-o event took place in the parking lot across from the Board of Education office on Riverside Parkway.

Participating school bus drivers were asked to drive a bus through an obstacle course designed to simulate difficult driving situations that might be faced on the road. The drivers were awarded points for successfully completing each section of the course.  Drivers were also tested on loading and unloading procedures and pre-trip inspection knowledge.  Wanda Ely tallied a total of 506 out of 550 possible points in the competition.

Andrew Furtado, a substitute bus driver in the Pepperell attendance area placed second with a total of 499 points.  Pete Culbreth, a driver in the Coosa area placed third with a point total of 487.  See the list below for the top ten drivers in this year’s competition.

Wanda Ely will represent Floyd County in the Georgia School Bus Safety Road-e-o to be held June 8 – 9, 2011 in Warner Robbins. The first and second place winners at the state level will be eligible to participate with the best drivers in North America in International competition to be held this summer.

Bus drivers from Floyd County Schools have a history of strong finishes in Bus Safety Road -e-o events. Floyd County drivers have finished first in the district, state, and international competitions.  Pepperell area drivers, Connie Beatenbough and Patti Cox have both won the Georgia title.  Cox was also crowned the International Driving Champion in 1999.
