LAB president: Tucson needs more commuters to compete
Andy Clarke, president of the League of American cyclists are in town for a series of events in the coming days. I could sit with him for 20 minutes at a dinner reception hosted by Richard and the perimeter Debernardi Platinum Cycling Challenge Committee.
We talked about where Tucson is and where he needs to lead a Platinum Bicycle Friendly Community. See the conversation below.
The League of American cyclists focuses on commuter cycling instead of recreational cycling. Why?
On a purely practical, for better or worse, the trips are counted to the extent that official statistics are concerned commuting. So if you want to register on the census and the American Community Survey data, we have people to do those daily trips to work. It must be seen. We must be able to compete with Davis and Portland and Boulder and San Franciscos and Minneapolises the world where there are two, three, four times the volume of cyclists that you here in Tucson.
This is a very practical level.I also think of a more philosophical level, the stuff of daily transportation is much more visible. It is much more accessible. It makes the whole bike thing more accessible and less intimidating to people.
Your recreational cyclist is always dressed in lycra, always on a $ 3000 bike, always with a group of like-minded people and the like. This can be intimidating for people who are not used to riding, who do not know where to ride, ride with that and I just want to go to work or shop.
I think the room every day more utility cycling is really important to change the general culture.It makes it bigger, more accessible, more credible than this stuff really makes a difference and its importance really.
As it is primarily a recreational activity, it is too easy to cut the budget when the weather becomes difficult or too easy to dismiss it as a matter of special social. That's what we need to get away from.
Each community has received amateur cyclists. You go to a bike less friendly place like Houston or Dallas or San Antonio (just to take three points at random). They have phenomenal bike clubs.They have an amazing recreational cycling community, but Houston essentially totally sucks for the bike every day.
You go to Portland, they still have the holiday scene, but there's just bike everywhere. There are people to do for school, work, church, for social - for everything. This really changes the dynamic. This is probably the single biggest piece missing to Tucson to correct.
