Miracle Network evaluating donation boundaries

Children's Miracle Network is re-evaluating its borders postcode, which determine where your donations go.

"Everybody believes in the value of the donations will go to your local Children's Hospital, the challenge is to define the word" local, "said John Hartman, director of CMN International (Canada).

This comes following complaints by a resident of Burlington, who said he thought he was giving money to McMaster Children's Hospital in Hamilton, but he was giving at the Hospital for Sick Children Toronto.

The major sponsors charity are Costco, Wal-Mart, TD Canada Trust and Dairy Queen.

However, TD makes its own decisions on where to send the money it collects. Since 2005, all donations through bank branches in Burlington, Hamilton and Niagara go to McMaster University, said Alan Convery, National Director of Community Relations TD Bank.

Donations TD at McMaster University totaled $ 229,936 in 2010 - $ 146,000 of clients and the rest of the bank.

"That's where the relationship is," said Convery. "It is important to know the money earned places in my community remains in the community."

A spokesman for McMaster Children's Hospital has reported a request for comment for the Children's Miracle Network.

McMaster has recently undergone changes that included closing its emergency department and inpatient care for adults, partly in order to attract more pediatric specialists. These and other factors will be considered during the reassessment process.
