Learn To Drive A Horse Without Lines From Legendary Trainer, Jesse Beery
Most horse owners and trainers know Jesse Beery was a renowned horse trainer in the 1800`s. He learned to train horses at a very young age, realized he had a gift and made it his life`s work. He taught horses many tricks, one of which was teaching a horse to drive without using lines.
About this topic, Beery stated ” While I do not advocate it as being a universally practical way of driving a horse, yet it is possible to so thoroughly train the horse, to certain signals that he can be controlled more reliably under excitement and in case of danger than it would be possible to manage him with bridle and lines.” as per www.articlesfactory.com
Though there are a number of ways to teach a horse this, Beery states that his method is the most reliable. He says first he turns the horse out into an enclosed area about twenty-five feet square. He would walk with a whip and teach the horse not to fear the whip and have confidence. A whip is used as a handling/guiding tool but the horse is NOT ever whipped!
When the horse learns ” Come Here” and the fear of the whip is gone while waving it about and he follows the trainer around the ring, then you have laid the foundation on which to build from. Stop for the day and reward him for a job well done. The next day, stand close to the horse`s hip and take a short whip and tap lightly on the right shoulder until the horse in anticipation of driving a fly off, will swing his head around to where the tapping is. More forward quickly and reward him with a treat. Note that the timing of the reward and treat is everything in getting him to understand what you want.
Step back and start the tapping and rewarding routine again. After a while, he will pick up on this as soon as tapping starts so make sure to reward each time with a pat and treat. Always train both sides of the horse. Once both sides are trained, an open bridle can be put on. Use short lines that only reach his tail and use them only if the horse is being unruly/stubborn. Make sure you get your message across each day before quitting your horse.
The whip should not be more than five feet long at this stage and you should stand directly behind him but beware of kickers. Let the whip reach to his mane.Signal for him to stop by raising the whip and holding it in a perpendicular position. Associate the meaning of the movement and position just as the whip is raised so the horse can see it. Pull hard on the reins and say ” Whoa!” at the same time. After a few times, the horse will pick it up.
