Investigator: Do juvenile sex offenders attend your school?

OHIO NORTHERN - More than 130 sex offenders minors live in the county of Cuyahoga, but chances are that students, parents and even administrators do not know if offenders attend their school, a channel 3 News investigation revealed.

Even if the school knows about it, most of the 10 school districts, the researcher Tom Meyer spoke with said they did not have a policy on how to treat juvenile sex offenders as students.

These include Bedford, Berea, Cleveland Heights-University Heights, the independence of South Euclid-Lyndhurst and Solon.

"I want parents to let them know because I would not send my children there," said parent Kimberly Lloyd. "It would not be possible."

Several district officials told Channel 3 News they are not allowed to say that students or parents of a child sex offender is entered because the offender's file is confidential.

But this is not the case, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

A spokesman said that schools may disclose information if the directors believe a significant security threat exists.

"The only thing worse than having a policy and not the next is not having a policy at all," said Carmen Naso, who prosecuted the juveniles in the office of Cuyahoga County Prosecutor and is currently Professor of Law at Case Western Reserve University.

"When you have a policy, at least you take some steps to minimize the potential risk of harm to the student body and the public," Naso said.

These districts include policies of Parma and Westlake. Officials there said they would not hesitate to communicate with parents and students about a sex offender of minors who is enrolled as a student.

Meanwhile, the directors of Maple Heights and Shaker Heights, said the district would inform staff only.

Cleveland and Garfield Heights school district officials did not return repeated calls for comment.

"If there is a sex offender in the neighborhood, they warn you," said parent Tyrone Dunlap. "And if more schools should. It should be a priority. "

Juvenile Court records show that 131 sex offenders minors live in 25 cities in Cuyahoga County. Cleveland has the most with 78, followed by Maple Heights and Garfield Heights with six each.

Five sex offenders are from Parma and four from Cleveland Heights.

But the law requires state schools to be notified if the student is considered a sexual predator Level III - the most dangerous. In addition, sex offenders under 14 can not be saved.
