Trey Baker of Hargrave Arcade
Trey Baker ’s East Austin home is full of television sets—big ones, small ones, mostly picked up from classified ads or Craigslist. Once every month, those screens light up in a brilliant display of pixels and sprites, as the arcade classics of yore return to life and Baker’s place makes its monthly transformation into the Hargrave Arcade . It’s not exactly a return to the glory days of Showbiz Pizza, but Baker’s DIY arcade—which the musician and filmmaker refers to as a “Punk E. Cheese”—does feature all the games, live music, big-screen movies, and food that nostalgic children of the ’80s and ’90s could ever request. And while there are no tickets to be won (though there is a raffle for CDs, vinyl, and more), guests of the arcade do reap the reward of knowing their $10 cover is being donated to a good cause; this month, it’s the prison literacy-promoting nonprofit Inside Books Project . “We figured out a way that like, you know, we can raise a nice chunk of money, and all we’re doing is playing video games and listening to music and having a good time,” Baker tells The A.V. Club, “instead of trying to improve the world by self-sacrifice, which people kind of have it in their head that charity events mean.”
Before the Hargrave Arcade opens its doors once more this Saturday, April 30, Baker invited The A.V. Club over for a round of NARC and a conversation about the arcade’s origins, some of its more elaborate offerings (like a cobbled-together facsimile of Star Wars Racer: Arcade ), and helping people unlock their playful sides.
The A.V. Club: What planted the seeds for the Hargrave Arcade?
Trey Baker: I’ve been doing philanthropic events in the spaces I live for like 10 years. It’s a really John Lennon-inspired, DIY, punk sort of thing. And I’ve always been a big fan of the ’80s and arcades. When I realized how cheaply I could acquire televisions, along with finding these greatest hits discs with these arcade emulations, I was like, “I could build an entire arcade really quickly and fairly cheaply.” And I’m also a musician and filmmaker myself, so it gives me a canvas to showcase my own stuff.
AVC: What were your favorite games growing up?
TB: Always Pac-Man .
